Key points
- There's no outright ban, but alcohol can worsen nausea and dehydration.
- With insulin or sulfonylureas, alcohol raises the risk of low blood sugar.
- Heavy drinking raises the risk of pancreatitis.
- Early research suggests semaglutide may reduce craving.
Can you drink alcohol on GLP-1 medicines?
There's no direct ban on alcohol in the labels for Mounjaro or semaglutide, but alcohol and these medicines can affect each other in ways worth knowing. Many people find they want to drink less on treatment anyway.
Why to be careful
- Stomach side effects. Alcohol can make nausea, vomiting and reflux worse, especially after a dose increase.
- Low blood sugar. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, alcohol raises the risk of low blood sugar.
- Pancreatitis. Heavy drinking is a major cause of pancreatitis, a rare but serious risk also listed for these medicines.
- Dehydration. Alcohol dehydrates you, and so can vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Calories. Drinks and the snacks that come with them can slow your progress.
Do GLP-1 medicines reduce the urge to drink?
Possibly. In a small 2025 trial of 48 adults with alcohol use disorder (JAMA Psychiatry), people on low-dose semaglutide for nine weeks drank less on drinking days and reported less craving than those on placebo. These medicines aren't approved for alcohol problems, and larger trials are under way.
If you choose to drink
- Keep it light, and avoid drinking in the days after a dose increase.
- Eat something first, and alternate with water.
- Choose lower-sugar drinks.
- Stop if you feel unwell, and never drive after drinking.

Some people find they want to drink less, and early research supports this, but they aren't approved for alcohol problems.
