What changed in March 2026
Novo Nordisk's patent on semaglutide expired in India on 20 March 2026. Generic versions launched within days, most of them on 21 March, and dozens of brands have since entered the market. Prices fell sharply: some generics cost a fraction of Wegovy.
Which generics exist, and what they're approved for
Not every generic semaglutide is approved for weight management. Some are approved only for type 2 diabetes. Examples at launch:
| Product | Form | Approved for | MRP per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natco semaglutide | Vial | Type 2 diabetes (at launch) | about ₹1,290 at launch |
| Semasize | Pen | Type 2 diabetes and weight management | ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 |
| Dr Reddy's Obeda | Pen | Type 2 diabetes (at launch) | about ₹4,200 at launch |
| Sun Pharma Noveltreat | Pen | Weight management | about ₹3,600 to ₹8,000 at launch |
| Emcure Poviztra (Novo Nordisk brand, not a generic) | Pen | Weight management | ₹3,999 to ₹8,999 |
Approvals and prices are changing quickly. Your doctor will check which products are currently approved for weight management before prescribing.

Lean Life does not sell medicines online: any medicine is prescribed only after a consultation with a Lean Life doctor, and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.
Is a generic as good as Wegovy?
An approved generic contains the same active medicine, semaglutide, and must meet regulatory standards. The main differences are the device (vial and syringe, or pen), the price, and what the product is licensed for. Dosing follows the same step-up schedule.
How to tell if a generic is approved for weight loss
- Check the pack insert: it should list 'chronic weight management' (or weight management) as an approved use, not only type 2 diabetes.
- Check the doses: weight management usually goes up to 2.4 mg a week; diabetes-only products often stop at 1 mg or 2 mg.
- Buy only on prescription from a licensed pharmacy, with a clear batch number and expiry date.
- Ask your doctor: they'll confirm which brands are currently approved for your use.
A year of treatment: generic vs branded
| Medicine | First 12 months at MRP |
|---|---|
| Generic semaglutide (Semasize, to 2.4 mg) | About ₹35,300 |
| Wegovy (to 2.4 mg) | About ₹1,66,810 |
| Mounjaro (to 10 mg) | About ₹2,35,781 |
Medicine only, at October 2026 MRPs and standard monthly dose steps.
Switching from Wegovy to a generic
Because the medicine is the same, many people can switch at the same weekly dose. Your doctor checks that the generic is approved for weight management at your dose, and shows you how to use the new pen or vial. Don't switch on your own.
Vials: what to know
- Vials need a syringe, and each dose must be measured carefully. Your doctor or nurse will show you how before you start.
- Use a new syringe each time and never share one.
- Follow the storage instructions on the pack, and keep unused vials in the fridge.
Getting generic semaglutide safely
- Buy only with a prescription, from a licensed pharmacy. Never from social media sellers, gyms or salons.
- Check the pack is sealed, the batch number and expiry date are printed clearly, and the price is not far below MRP.
- Pens and vials should arrive cold, in insulated packaging.
- If anything looks wrong, don't inject it. Show it to your pharmacist or doctor.
Results to expect
An approved generic contains the same medicine as Wegovy, so similar results are expected at the same doses: in the STEP 1 trial, adults on semaglutide 2.4 mg lost about 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, alongside diet and activity changes. Results month by month.
Generic semaglutide at Lean Life
If a generic is right for you, your doctor will prescribe a product approved for weight management, from a licensed pharmacy, and adjust the dose with you. Your programme, check-ins and InBody tracking are the same whichever medicine you take.
