Key points

  • Foods high in protein and fibre keep you full for fewer calories.
  • Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with protein, a quarter with grains.
  • Sugary drinks, fried snacks and maida are the biggest hidden sources of calories.
  • On GLP-1 treatment, eat protein first.

What makes a food good for weight loss

No single food melts fat. Foods help you lose weight when they keep you full for fewer calories. That usually means foods high in protein or fibre, with a lot of water and not much fat or sugar. Here are the best everyday Indian options.

  • Mithai, biscuits and bakery items.
  • Maida: white bread, naan, pav, many noodles.
  • Large portions of rice, roti or poha with little protein or vegetables.
  • Alcohol, which adds calories and lowers your guard around food.

How to build a weight-loss thali

A simple rule: fill half your plate with vegetables or salad, a quarter with protein (dal, paneer, curd, egg, chicken or fish), and a quarter with grains (1 to 2 rotis or a small katori of rice). Use a smaller plate, and eat the protein and vegetables first.

On Mounjaro or semaglutide?

GLP-1 medicines make you feel full sooner, so what you do eat matters more. Put protein first, eat slowly, stop when you're comfortably full, and go easy on oily and very spicy food, which can make nausea worse. See eating well on GLP-1 treatment and our vegetarian and non-vegetarian 7-day plans.

At Lean Life an advisor answers your questions first, free. A Lean Life doctor then assesses you and decides whether medicine is right for you, alongside a dietitian and regular InBody reviews. We don't sell medicines online.

Questions

Which Indian food is best for weight loss?

There's no single best food. Dals, sprouts, paneer, curd, eggs, vegetables and millets all help because they are filling for few calories.

Is roti or rice better for weight loss?

Portion matters more than the choice. One or two rotis or a small katori of rice, with plenty of dal and vegetables, both work.

Are millets good for weight loss?

Jowar, bajra and ragi have more fibre than white rice or maida, which helps you feel full. They still have calories, so watch portions.

Can I eat ghee while losing weight?

A teaspoon a meal is fine for most people. Ghee is calorie-dense, so measure it rather than pouring.
