What Wegovy is
Wegovy is semaglutide for weight management, made by Novo Nordisk and launched in India in June 2025. Its prices were cut in November 2025 and again in April 2026. Since semaglutide's patent expired in India on 20 March 2026, generic versions have also been available. Read about generic semaglutide.
How it works
Semaglutide copies GLP-1, a hormone released after eating. It slows stomach emptying and reduces appetite. In the STEP 1 trial, adults on 2.4 mg lost about 15% of their body weight on average over 68 weeks, alongside diet and activity changes.
What the trials showed
| Trial | Who took part | Result |
|---|---|---|
| STEP 1 (68 weeks) | Adults with obesity, without diabetes | 14.9% average weight loss on 2.4 mg (placebo 2.4%) |
| STEP 2 (68 weeks) | Adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes | 9.6% on 2.4 mg (placebo 3.4%) |
| STEP 4 (68 weeks) | People already on semaglutide for 20 weeks | Those who continued lost a further 7.9%; those switched to placebo regained 6.9% |
| SELECT (about 3 years) | Adults with heart disease and overweight, without diabetes | 20% fewer heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths |
Trials combined medicine with diet and activity advice. Individual results vary.
Who it's for
Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. It's not for anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, or with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2.

Missed doses and storage
- Missed a dose? Take it within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip it and take the next dose on your usual day.
- Keep unused pens in the fridge at 2 to 8°C. Don't freeze them.
- Once in use, the pen can be kept below 30°C or in the fridge for up to 6 weeks.
- Travel with an insulated pouch and keep pens out of hot cars and sunlight.
Side effects
In STEP 1, about 3 in 4 people on semaglutide had a stomach side effect, compared with about half on placebo, mostly mild and passing. 7% stopped because of side effects. Read the side effects guide.
Eating well on Wegovy
Smaller, protein-first meals work best: dal, paneer, curd, eggs, chicken or fish first, then vegetables, then a little roti or rice. See the 7-day Indian diet plan and protein calculator.
If you stop
In STEP 4, people switched to placebo regained much of the weight they had lost. Talk to your doctor about stepping down gradually and keeping the habits you've built. Stopping GLP-1 treatment.
Checking it's genuine
- Buy only with a prescription, from a licensed pharmacy. Never from social media sellers, gyms or salons.
- Check the pack is sealed, the batch number and expiry date are printed clearly, and the price is not far below MRP.
- Pens and vials should arrive cold, in insulated packaging.
- If anything looks wrong, don't inject it. Show it to your pharmacist or doctor.
