Is there a weight loss tablet in India?
Not yet, as of October 2026. The GLP-1 tablets sold in India, Rybelsus and its generic versions, are approved for type 2 diabetes. Tablets made for weight loss exist in the US, and their makers have applied, or plan to apply, in India. For weight management today, the approved options in India are weekly injections.
The tablets available in India
| Tablet | Company | Approved in India for | MRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) | Novo Nordisk | Type 2 diabetes | ₹2,972 to ₹3,628 per strip of 10 (3 mg to 14 mg) |
| Obeda tablets (oral semaglutide) | Dr Reddy's | Type 2 diabetes | ₹99 to ₹225 a tablet (3 mg to 14 mg), launched May 2026 |
| Semalix (oral semaglutide) | Torrent | Type 2 diabetes | Check current MRP |
Rybelsus is taken once a day, starting at 3 mg for a month, then 7 mg, and 14 mg if needed. It must be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, and you then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medicines, because food stops it being absorbed.

Lean Life does not sell medicines online: any medicine is prescribed only after a consultation with a Lean Life doctor, and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.
Weight loss tablets coming to India
- Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide, up to 25 mg). Approved in the US. In September 2026, an expert committee of India's drug regulator asked Novo Nordisk for more data, including India-specific studies, before it would consider approval.
- Foundayo (orforglipron), from Eli Lilly. A once-daily GLP-1 tablet approved in the US in April 2026 for weight management. Lilly's chief executive has said it could launch in India as early as 2027, if regulators approve it.
Tablets vs injections
| Weekly injection | Daily tablet | |
|---|---|---|
| How often | Once a week | Every day, on an empty stomach |
| Approved for weight loss in India | Yes (tirzepatide; Wegovy and some generic semaglutides) | Not yet |
| Rules around food | None | Wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking |
| Side effects | Mainly nausea and other stomach effects | Similar stomach effects |
For most people, the choice today is simple: if weight is the goal, an approved weekly injection is the option your doctor can prescribe. If you have type 2 diabetes and prefer a tablet, your doctor may consider oral semaglutide.
Beware of “weight loss pills” sold online
Tablets or drops sold on social media or websites as “GLP-1 pills”, “natural Ozempic” or “Mounjaro tablets” are not approved medicines. There is no Mounjaro tablet. Products like these can contain nothing useful, or undeclared drugs. Only take GLP-1 medicines prescribed by a doctor and supplied by a licensed pharmacy.
