Key points
- Ozempic is semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, launched in India in December 2025.
- MRP: ₹5,660 to ₹9,100 a month, from 0.25 mg to 1 mg.
- Wegovy is the same medicine at higher doses, approved for weight management.
- For weight loss without diabetes, doctors usually choose a product approved for weight management.
What Ozempic is
Ozempic is Novo Nordisk's once-weekly semaglutide injection for type 2 diabetes. Novo launched it in India in December 2025 in a FlexTouch pen, in three strengths: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg. In India it is approved as an add-on to diet and exercise for adults whose type 2 diabetes isn't controlled.
Ozempic price in India
Novo Nordisk cut Ozempic and Wegovy prices from 1 April 2026. The MRPs for a month of Ozempic are:
| Weekly dose | MRP per month |
|---|---|
| 0.25 mg | ₹5,660 |
| 0.5 mg | ₹8,100 |
| 1 mg | ₹9,100 |
* Prices are manufacturers' maximum retail prices (MRP) in India, checked October 2026, and are shown as a guide only. Prices change often and may differ when you buy. Lean Life does not sell medicines online: any medicine is prescribed only after a consultation with a Lean Life doctor, and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.
Ozempic vs Wegovy
| Ozempic | Wegovy | |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| Approved in India for | Type 2 diabetes | Weight management |
| Highest weekly dose in India | 1 mg | 2.4 mg |
| Price per month (MRP) | ₹5,660 to ₹9,100 | ₹5,660 to ₹16,400 |
They contain the same medicine. The difference is the approved use and the dose: Wegovy goes up to 2.4 mg a week and is licensed for weight management, while Ozempic stops at 1 mg and is licensed for diabetes. That's why, for weight loss on its own, doctors prescribe a product approved for weight management rather than Ozempic.
Can Ozempic be used for weight loss?
Many people with type 2 diabetes lose weight on Ozempic, and that's part of why it's so widely known. But in India it isn't approved for weight loss in people without diabetes, and its highest dose is lower than the dose used for weight management. If weight is your main goal, your doctor will usually consider Wegovy, an approved generic semaglutide for weight management, or tirzepatide (Mounjaro).
Generic versions
Since the semaglutide patent expired in India on 20 March 2026, several companies sell semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, such as Dr Reddy's Obeda and Sun Pharma's Sematrinity. Others are approved for weight management, such as Noveltreat and Semasize. See generic semaglutide in India.
Side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation, mostly when starting or increasing the dose. People who take insulin or a sulfonylurea as well need their doses checked to avoid low blood sugar. Read the side effects guide.
Getting Ozempic safely
- Buy only with a prescription, from a licensed pharmacy. Never from social media sellers, gyms or salons.
- Check the pack is sealed, with a clear batch number and expiry date, and the price isn't far below MRP.
- Pens should arrive cold, in insulated packaging.
