Mounjaro 5 mg in India: price, when it's used and what to expect

What Mounjaro 5 mg is for

5 mg is one of the three Mounjaro doses used as a long-term treatment dose (5 mg, 10 mg and 15 mg). Your doctor moves you up in 2.5 mg steps, at least four weeks apart, until you reach the dose that works for you with side effects you can manage. Some people stay at 5 mg for months; others move up.

Mounjaro 5 mg price in India

One Mounjaro 5 mg KwikPen has four weekly doses and an MRP of ₹16,406, so a month of treatment at this strength costs about ₹16,406, or around ₹4,102 a week.

A 5 mg single-dose vial is also sold in India at ₹4,102 each. Four vials cost about the same as one pen; vials need a syringe, and your doctor or nurse will show you how to use them.

Weight loss at 5 mg

In the main trial of tirzepatide for weight loss (SURMOUNT-1), adults who stayed on 5 mg for 72 weeks, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, lost an average of 15.0% of their body weight. Results vary from person to person, and many people reach their goal on a lower dose than the highest.

Side effects at this stage

Stomach side effects are most common in the weeks after a dose increase. In SURMOUNT-1, about 25% of people on 5 mg had nausea at some point, compared with about 10% on placebo. Most cases were mild to moderate and eased with time.

• Eat smaller meals and stop when you feel full.
• Choose plain, protein-rich food and drink plenty of fluids.
• Tell your doctor if vomiting or diarrhoea doesn't settle, or you can't keep fluids down.
• Get urgent help for severe stomach pain that spreads to your back, which can be a sign of pancreatitis.

Missed a dose?

If it's been 4 days (96 hours) or less since you missed it, take it as soon as you remember. If it's been more than 4 days, skip it and take the next one on your usual day. Never take two doses within 3 days of each other. Our missed-dose checker works it out for you.

Storing your pen

Keep unopened pens in the fridge (2°C to 8°C), never in the freezer. Once you've started a pen, it can be kept at up to 30°C for up to 30 days, then thrown away even if a dose is left. In an Indian summer, keep it in the fridge or a cool bag rather than in a car or bag in the sun.

• Buy only with a prescription, from a licensed pharmacy. Never from social media sellers, gyms or salons.
• Check the pack is sealed, the batch number and expiry date are printed clearly, and the price is not far below MRP.
• Pens should arrive cold, in insulated packaging.
• If anything looks wrong, don't inject it. Show it to your pharmacist or doctor.
